Description

This study aims to analyze the prevalence of eating disorders among young male and female athletes from the Norwegian College of Elite Sport compared to a group of non-athletes from the same age group.

Method

The study is planned in 2 phases: a questionnaire "Eating Disorder Inventory" (phase 1), which will be followed by a clinical interview "Eating Disorder Examination" (phase 2). Included in the project will be first-year students from the Norwegian Elite Sport High Schools, as well as from 2 randomly selected secondary schools.

Students who report symptoms associated with eating disorders will be classified as "students at-risk" for eating disorders. In the 2nd phase, all "students at-risk", as well as a random selection of "non-risk students" (from both the Elite Sport High Schools and the 2 control schools) will be invited to a clinical interview to verify or refuse the diagnosis eating disorders (through, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or ED not otherwise specified).

The study will be the first report of the prevalence of clinically verified eating disorders in a group of young elite athletes.
