Description

Background: Several intervention studies have revealed preventative effect on a range of injuries within different sports. Subsequent to the studies, adoption and maintenance of the prevention programmes in the targeted population is known to be challenging. Knowledge regarding attitudes, beliefs and motivational factors towards injury prevention are highlighted as crucial information to succeed. However, few studies have addressed this.

Aim: Investigate attitudes, beliefs and motivational factors towards injury prevention in elite handball.

Methods: During a randomised controlled trial, aiming to prevent overuse shoulder injuries in elite handball, all coaches (n=44) and captains (n=44) in the intervention- (n=21) and control clubs (n=23) were included in a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire, based on the RE-AIM (reach, efficacy, adoption, implementation, maintenance) framework was sent by mail to all participants towards the end of the intervention period.

Implications: The results will provide knowledge regarding attitudes, beliefs and motivational factors towards injury prevention in elite handball and may contribute to successful “real” life prevention programmes in future intervention studies. In addition, the results will contribute to information that potentially will increase adoption and maintenance of the prevention programmed used in the randomised controlled trial in the handball community in general.
