Dr.med. Asbjørn Årøen er tilknyttet ved Senter for idrettsskadeforskning ved Norges idrettshøgskole. Han er spesialist i generell kirurgi og ortopedisk kirurgi. Han er overlege ved Ortopedisk avdeling ved Akershus Universitetssykehus. Asbjørn er leder for "Norwegian Cartilage Project", noe han har vært siden 2015.
I 1997 var han forskningsfellow ved professor Freddie H. Fu ved Universitet i Pittsburgh. Han var over en 2 års periode lege for fotballklubben Fjellhammer IL der han jobbet spesielt med å forebygge idrettsskader.
Asbjørn har i Mars-April 2008 gjennomført ESSKA 2000 APOSSM Travelling Fellowship Tour som tildeles 3 yngre kirurger fra Europa innen idrettsmedisin, kne og skulderkirurgi hvert 2 år. Asbjørn er den første og foreløpig den eneste som har gjennomført et slikt fellowship fra Norge. I 2012 mottok han som sisteforfatter den prestisjefylte Hugston award for beste artikkel i American Journal of Sports Medicine i 2011.
Han har publisert 84 forskningsartikler om emnene; bruskskader, bakre korsbåndskade, posterolateral ligament kompleks i kneet, ankelproblem og Achilles sene skader. I tillegg har han publisert 2 oversiktsartikler om leddbruskskader og behandling av disse.
Han veileder 3 PhD studenter som fokuserer på behandling av brusk og ligamentskader i kneet, og har nylig ført sin første doktorgradskandidat Dr Randsborg frem til vellykket forsvar av sin doktorgrad på barnebrudd i juni 2012.
Hans forskningsaktivitet nå er primært rettet mot forekomst, skademekanismer og behandlingsalternativ for leddbruskskader som også var hans doktorgradsarbeid ved Universitetet i Oslo oktober 2005; Cartilage Injuries and the Repair Process.
Asbjørn arbeider nå med oppfølging av et prosjekt vedrørende stamcellebehandling for leddbruskskader og det naturlige forløpet av leddbruskskader sammen med korsbåndskade. I perioden Oktober til Desember 2012 har Asbjørn vært ved Steadman Phillippon Research Institute hvor han har deltatt i en biomekanisk robotstudie med formål om å forbedre kirurgien av bakre korsbånd.
