Description
Background: Handball is known to be one of the sports with highest injury burden and injury prevalence. Early specialization in sports has been shown to be a possible factor to the high injury prevalence among young athletes. Further research on this field is necessary, particularlystudies with a more extended follow-up period.
Aims: The overall objective for this project is to study the development and occurrence of injuries and illnesses amongst Norwegian adolescence handball players through their three-year period in high school (ages 15-19). It involves a comparative analysis between junior players attending sportacademy high school and public high school.
Methods: We followed four yearly cohorts during their three years of high school.During the pre-season the participants body composition was measured, and physical testing was conducted (counter movement jump, sprint, agility, endurance and strength). In addition, they completed three questionnaires, one general baseline questionnaire, one regarding motivation and one regarding perfectionism. During the season the participants have filled out an injury and illness questionnaire every second week.
Implications: By gaining more knowledge about development, prevalence of injuries and potential variables that may influence the extent of injuries amongst young handball players, it may be possible to reduce the number of injuries and the injury burden within this population.
