The Prince Philip Medal to Professor Bahr
Intoduction
On Wednesday, 15th October 2008 during a glittering reception at Buckingham Palace, London attended by distinguished representatives from the fields of Medicine, Science, Research, Politics and Sport Professor Roald Bahr M.D., Ph.D was presented with the Prince Philip Medal in Sports and Exercise Medicine by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh K.C.V.O., K.C.G.
The Medal, only once previously awarded when launched twelve years ago, is given for an outstandingly significant and original contribution to the advancement of medical knowledge or technique in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
This medal will be awarded to a doctor who, in the opinion of the Board of The Institute, has made an outstandingly significant and original national or international contribution to the advancement of knowledge in Sports and Exercise Medicine.
Dr Michael Turner M.D., on behalf of the Chairman and Board of The Institute, drew particular attention to the work of Professor Bahr in founding and chairing the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre which was founded in 2000 and now has an international reputation for excellence, particularly in research devoted to the prevention of sports injuries.
The International World Conferences on Sport Injury Prevention in Oslo (2005) and Tromsø (2008) were landmark events. Mr. Turner outlined the distinguished career of Professor Bahr noting his contribution to the Department of Sports Medicine at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, the National Olympic Training Centre (Olympiatoppen) and his past chairmanship of the National Council on Physical Activity and presidency of the Norwegian Society of Sports Medicine.
It was also observed that whilst being a current member of the Sports Medicine Council of the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports he is also President of the Medical Commission of the International Volleyball Federation and has recently had the distinction of being elected to the International Olympic Committee Medical Commission Medical and Scientific Group.
Professor Bahrs research has principally been in sport injury prevention and it is for his huge endeavour in this field that The Institute wishes to honour him not only for his outstanding dedication but also leadership which has justifiably brought him international recognition.
It gave The Institute particular pleasure to welcome his wife Ingrid and their three children Martin, Rebekka and Karoline.
