The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center educate 22 new Olympic sports medicine doctors
Intoduction
It has been an active week at the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center these days. Once again, the center has hosted doctors from all over the world, who have had their final 3 days of exams, lectures and workshops, as part of the IOC Diploma in Sports Medicine. 3 days were filled with professional and interesting exchanges about what it takes for a doctor to follow athletes through the season and to major championships.

This year marks the 10th anniversary (2015) of the first time the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center, led by Lars Engebretsen and Kathrin Steffen, hosted the course for doctors, taking a 2-year online course under the auspices of the IOC. However, this is the 8th time it has been arranged due to two pandemic years without (2020 and 2021), here at the Norwegian School of Sport Sciences.
The course ends with a 3-day seminar/workshop/exam in Oslo, in parallel with 4 other IOC medical centers around the world (Amsterdam, Seoul, Pretoria, Calgary). This year's group has consisted of just over 100 doctors, spread over a total of 5 cities.
The aim of this continuing education program through the IOC is to increase knowledge and, not least, facilitate a network within sports medicine. The aim is to prepare doctors in the best possible way for their tasks as doctors for athletes.
Both Lars Engebretsen and Kathrin Steffen, who have been responsible for the course these days, were very pleased with the efforts of all the doctors who made the trip to NiH and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center.
It is still important for the center to contribute to this course, in collaboration with the other IOC medical centers, in order to continue to educate international doctors who will participate in major international sporting events.
Several different lecturers were brought in these days, from the Olympiatoppen, the Sports Health Center, to name a few.The lecture topics included “Female health - health and performance”, “How to deal with sports cardiology as a sports medicine physician”, “Nutritional support for injuries in sport”, “REDs - case discussions” and “Diagnosis and management of concussions: practicing the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT6)”.
There were also three different sessions of work-shops/practical teaching, focusing on different parts of the body (knee, ankle, back, thigh, etc.) and what is important to know in relation to examination techniques for sports injuries.
The 22 doctors who came to Oslo for the final part of the course came from Belgium, Cyprus, Australia, Denmark, Singapore, France, Bahrain, Switzerland, Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia, Lithuania, Israel, India, Sri Lanka, Germany and Saudi Arabia.
Congratulations to this year's doctors in the 2-year online program “IOC Diploma in Sports Medicine”!
