The 4th Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport just launched

Intoduction

The main goal for the 4th International Concussion Consensus Conference held in November 2012 in Zurich, Switzerland, was to support the medical staff acting in the field by offering an expert consensus based on current and recent scientific evidence to facilitate decision-making.

Concussion must be recognized quickly and treated appropriately. However, the most important aspect of medical management is the timing of return to sport decision.

This special issue of British Journal of Sports Medicine, following the 4th International Conference on Concussion in Sport is carrying 12 review papers that complement the Consensus statement and 10 years of continuous scientific collaboration of major international sports federations: IOC, FIFA, IEF (Equestrian), IIHF (Ice Hockey), IRB (Rugby).

A group of experts within the fields of neuroscience, clinical and sports medicine, neuroimaging, and sport sciences was gathered in late 2012 to address specific issues related to concussion: epidemiology, basic and clinical science, injury grading systems, cognitive assessment, new research methods, management, and prevention.

This 4th expert meeting provided new and revised practical guidelines, simple sideline assessment tools (SCAT), on how to handle concussions in sports to the benefits and safety of the athletes.

The new guidelines come with a great tool-box:

The revised Sport Concussion Assessment Tool (SCAT3), including a Child-SCAT3 and a Pocket-Concussion Recognition Tool (CRT), are developed to support the medical staff and others in the difficult return to sport decisions.

The SCAT Tools have been promoted by the international sports federations within their educational courses and thereby had a major impact on the diagnosis and treatment of concussions in many sports throughout the last years.

The special issue of BJSM relates to Injury Prevention and Health Protection (IPHP) and the IOC supports 4 such theme issues annually. We congratulate the editors of this 4th Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport: Paul McCrory, Winne Meeuwisse, and Jiri Dvorak.
