Roald Bahr new president of FIVB Medical Commission
Intoduction
Professor Roald Bahr, the chair of the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center, was elected as the new president of the Medical Commission of the International Volleyball Federation, FIVB, during the 2006 FIVB World Congress held in Tokyo, Japan October 23-25, 2006.
The 30th FIVB World Congress set a new record in the history of the institution as 192 national Volleyball federations were represented at the session. The biggest-ever attendance at an FIVB Congress represents almost 90% of the 219 national federations affiliated to the FIVB the worlds sole governing body for the sports of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball and comprises a total of 227 delegates present in Tokyo. The FIVB World Congress held elections to the Board of Administration, the Councils and Commissions as well as the post of FIVB President, for which the incumbent President Dr Ruben Acosta Hernandez was unanimously re-elected.
Dr. Bahr has been a member of the Medical Commission of the FIVB from 1998 to 2000, when he was elected as the commission president. The presidency of the FIVB Medical Commission is important position within international sports medicine, as it represents one of the largest Olympic sports with a large following on all continents. Dr. Bahr is himself a former elite player with several championship titles, playing for the national team from 1978 until he retired in 1983 with 58 matches for Norway. He was also the Head Coach of the National Team from 1986 to 1990 with an overall record of 40 wins and 17 losses, a team which became Nordic champions in 1988. He has also been involved with the Norwegian beach volleyball teams since the early 90s and is the team physician of the Norwegian Beach Volleyball teams.
