Intoduction

The Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center has started a project to investigate the injury incidence and injury mechanisms among children and adolescents in organized sports in the community of Hamar and Gjøvik.

We expect about 10-15 % of all children and adolescents between 6 and 16 years old playing sports having a sports injury each year, but exact data is currently available.

During the season 2005-2006 an injury registration will be done in football, team handball, ice hockey, field hockey, cross country skiing and martial arts, to investigate the exact number of injuries. This registration will be done by the coaches in the teams. In addition to this, a registration will be done in emergency units in the local hospitals of Hamar and Gjøvik. In emergency units injuries from training- or match session of all players between 6 and 16 years old is registred.Based on the results from the baseline study, an injury prevention program will be developed aiming to reduce the incidence of injuries in this actual age group. The injury registration has already started for Summers sports (football). In the Autumn/Winter 2005/06 injury registration will be done in team handball, ice hockey, field hockey, cross country skiing and martial arts. All sports clubs in the community of Hamar and Gjøvik providing team handball, ice hockey, field hockey, cross country skiing and/or martial arts are invitied to participate in the study.Invitation will be sent to current coaches, and invitation and reply coupon will also be found on our web-site.
