New findings on knee ligament function

Intoduction

In a new study from the American Journal of Sports Medicine, new and important findings on knee ligament function were revealed.

Twenty-four cadaver knees were tested in various degrees of knee flexion while loaded in varus/valgus, internal/external rotation and anterior/posterior forces. Buckle transducers on the posterior oblique ligament and superficial medial collateral ligament posterior and distal divisions measured the resulting forces. It was found that the superficial medial collateral ligament experienced the largest load response to applied valgus and external rotation torques, whereas the posterior oblique ligament observed the highest load response to internal rotation near extension.

 

This paper provides new knowledge of the biomechanical function of the main structures of the medial side of the knee. The findings here will help the interpretation of the clinical test and provide knowledge of which structures should be repaired or reconstructed after ligament injuries on the medial side of the knee.

 

The study was a cooperation between the University of Minnesota and Ullevaal University Hospital. The authors were Chad J. Griffith, Coen A. Wijdicks, Robert F. LaPrade, Bryan M. Armitage, Steinar Johansen and Lars Engebretsen.
