New Book on Volleyball Medicine
Intoduction
Volleyball, edited by Jonathan C. Reeser MD PhD and Roald Bahr MD PhD, has recently been released by Blackwell Publishing.
Volleyball represents the newest addition to the highly acclaimed "Handbook of Sports Medicine and Science" series, published by the Medical Commission of the International Olympic Committee. Each volume in this series of soft cover texts is intended to serve as a definitive reference for professionals working with competitive athletes in a specific sport, including team coaches, sports medicine physicians, athletic trainers, and physical therapists, in addition to the athletes themselves.
As the Table of Contents suggests, Volleyball provides a comprehensive overview of the scientific and clinical aspects of the sport. With contributions by well-respected authorities from seven different countries, Volleyball achieves an harmonious integration of basic and applied scientific information that is at once comprehensive in approach, practical in content, and accessible in delivery. As the most up-to-date sports medicine reference available for this dynamic sport, Volleyball will help to improve the medical care delivered to all volleyball athletes.
Volleyball is the result of a collaborative effort from its co-editors, both of whom are members of the Medical Commission of the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). Jonathan C. Reeser is Chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Marshfield Clinic in Marshfield, Wisconsin, USA. He also serves as Chair of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission. Roald Bahr is Chair of both the Olso Sports Trauma Research Institute, and the Department of Sports Medicine at the Norwegian University of Sport and Physical Education. He is also a former member of the Norwegian Men's National Volleyball Team. Drs. Reeser and Bahr recently collaborated on a study entitled "Injuries Among World-Class Professional Beach Volleyball Players - The FIVB Beach Volleyball Injury Study", published in the January/February 2003 issue of The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
